WHAT IS INFANT MASSAGE?
Infant massage is a bonding activity between parents and their children. In the most basic terms, infant or pediatric massage refers to the process of stroking the muscles of an infant using a variety of specialized massage techniques. Vocalization, eye-to-eye contact, and other positive behavioral reinforcements are also important components of the massage.
It is never too late to begin massage... Whether your baby is a newborn or several years old, massage can bring immediate and lasting results. Expectant parents who take infant massage instruction in advance are ready to begin this wonderful loving touch right from the start. This ancient parenting practice has been modernized and is in active-use today, supported by evidence-based research.
my SERVICES
HOME VISIT - ONE-ON-ONE
A home session can be set up to work closely with parent and baby to teach the skills and benefits of infant massage, create deep connections between parent and child, and work to foster the language of touch.
HOME VISIT - GROUP MEETUP
Group meet-ups can be done in a home setting and cater to groups of up to five babies and parents. Invite your friends over for an educational and casual group learning environment, working through the same skills and techniques as a traditional class.
COMMUNITY CLASSES
In addition to other types of classes, community classes are ideally offered. Community classes will be posted with dates and times. If you have a community location that is interested in hosting an Infant Massage class, please contact the instructor in the section at the bottom of this site.
ABOUT ME
My passion for this field is based on the belief that every child deserves the best possible start in life. Below is a summary of my preparation for this area of study and examples of jobs I have had relating to this field.
Education:
BS in Family and Consumer Sciences from Indiana University of PA with emphasis in Child Development
M.Ed with emphasis on Child Development from Penn State University
Certified as an Infant Massage Instructor from Loving Touch Foundation of Portland, Oregon
Refresher course including new research in Infant Massage completed in 2021
Various enrichment credits required yearly to expand knowledge of Infant Massage
All clearances required to work with children obtained and kept up to date as stated by Pennsylvania law
Experience:
Teacher, including preschool through college level
Child Life Specialist, Pediatric Unit, Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh
Teacher of Infant Massage at the Genesis Parent Learning Center in Bellevue, PA
Volunteer with infants at the Children’s Home of Pittsburgh and Lemieux Family Center
Education Representative for developmentally appropriate activities from Discovery Toys
Raised three children of my own
